Learn to Relieve Your Stress with Positive Affirmations

Learn to Relieve Your Stress With Positive Affirmations
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Evelyn_Roberts_Brooks]Evelyn Roberts Brooks

All of us do it: we talk to ourselves all the time. Even if you aren't talking out loud in an empty room that doesn't mean you aren't a regular self-talker. You probably are, in your head. That silent stream of thoughts that runs almost endlessly through your mind is called self-talk.

The messages you give yourself are as powerful as the commands a computer programmer gives to a whirring and buzzing hard drive, because these are the messages that direct your actions and produce your feelings.

That's why it's so important to become aware of the precise nature of the messages that you flood your mind with day after day. It's not enough to vaguely notice that you are not always your own best friend, and make an equally vague promise to change.

If you really want to reduce your stress level, it is necessary to get into the specifics so that you can make a concentrated effort to change the "computer program" that you are running in your head.

To get started, ask yourself these questions, and take time to give thoughtful responses:

• Do you put yourself down all the time?
• Do you give yourself sarcastic comments about your appearance, your abilities and how things are going in your life today?
• When someone criticizes you, do you repeat their words to yourself over and over, ensuring that the negative words become part of your programming?
• Do you predict failure with each new project you start?
• Do you remind yourself of past mistakes again and again, particularly when you are about to embark on a similar type of situation?
• And what about your relationships - do you constantly complain about other people to yourself, hammering home the idea that you are unhappy and discontented in all areas of your life?

For many people, it comes as a complete and utter shock to realize what an enemy they are to themselves with all the negative self-talk and messages of unhappiness. However, since you are the one giving yourself these negative messages, guess what the good news is? That's right, it means that you can reverse those messages, and over time, you will see remarkable results from your new positive self-image.

Now that you have become aware of what you're doing to yourself and how frequently you sabotage your own efforts, you're not stuck with the problem. You can change the negative into positive, and be on your own side from now on.

Here are five steps to follow, to make the shift from negative to positive affirmations:

1. Give yourself frequent encouragement
2. Reduce your stress with calming statements
3. Let go of the past by reminding yourself you can't change it
4. Stop living in the future by grounding yourself in the present moment
5. Take a crash course in being good to yourself

The power of affirmations is well-documented, so don't hesitate to switch around the messages you give yourself each day to be sure they are positive and encouraging rather than undermining you.

Change of Attitude

I have lost substantial weight and inches since August. My entire attitude has changed about my own self-perception. Since I have been working out, I find myself not comparing my body to others. I am more confident now about my appearance. Have you lost weight? Have your perception and attitude about yourself changed?
